1987

IU concludes the calendar year with 61,691 donors, $35.4 million in total gifts, and an endowment value of $189 million.

1988

Curt Simic takes over as president and CEO of the IU Foundation. Faculty Foundation Relations Committee is invited to attend all IUF Board of Directors meetings and to meet regularly with the IUF president, assuring faculty awareness and participation in the University’s overall fundraising program.

1989

The Campaign for Indiana, begun in 1985 with a goal of $203 million, concludes having generated $316.1 million in gifts to IU.

1989

The IU Foundation becomes one of the first university foundations in the country to hire an internal auditor, further committing to openness and integrity in all its financial operations.

1990

Indiana University breaks into the ranks of the nation’s top 20 universities in total voluntary support from the private sector. It has remained there for 16 of the 18 years since.

1994

The IU Foundation and the IU Alumni Association combine their databases, improving the accuracy and efficiency of the University’s alumni and donor records.

1994

The Bloomington Endowment Campaign launches with a goal of $350 million, primarily for endowed faculty positions.

1995

The six-year campaign for the IU School of Medicine generates $210 million and sets a new trend in fundraising strategy: major campaigns focused on a specific academic unit.

1997

The A.T. Kearney analysis of giving to Indiana University documents that segmenting donors into different audiences according to interests and backgrounds is a more effective way to build relationships than the “one size fits all” approach of mass marketing.

1997

The IUPUI Comprehensive Campaign launches with a goal of $500 million. The original goal is met during the silent phase of the campaign.

1998-1999

IU East’s Campaign for the Danielson Learning Center in New Castle generates more than $1 million for the new building and energizes the Henry County community.

1999, 2000, 2005

The Council for the Advancement and Support of Education announces that the IU Foundation has received its annual award for overall excellence in educational fundraising.

2000

For the first time, the number of donors to Indiana University tops 100,000, the total amount of gifts tops $100 million, and the total value of all assets managed by the IU Foundation tops $1 billion—all in the same year.

2000

The Bloomington Endowment Campaign concludes, having raised $504.3 million and placing IU at the top of the Big Ten in overall number of endowed chairs.

2002

IU Southeast completes the first community-based capital campaign for an IU campus, raising $15 million—$5 million over goal—for scholarships, faculty and staff development, and technology.

2003

The IU Foundation Board of Directors initiates Plan 2010, a long-range strategic plan, setting both benchmark and strategic goals.

2003

Matching the Promise: IU Bloomington launches its silent phase with a working goal of $750 million, later raised to $1 billion.

2004

The firm of Deloitte & Touche presents an external audit report on the IU Foundation noting “no reportable conditions, significant deficiencies, or material weaknesses,” an unusual occurrence for any organization. They have given the same report for each of the four years since, and the firm now holds up IUF as a model of best practices.

2004

The IUPUI Comprehensive Campaign concludes, having brought renewed visibility to the campus in the greater Indianapolis community. The final tally: $1.04 billion.

2004

The market value of Indiana University’s endowment exceeds $1 billion.

2005

The Development Leadership Council is established to facilitate dialogue between the upper echelon of IU leadership, including deans and chief administrators, and officers of the IU Foundation.

2006

In another landmark for community-based fundraising, IU East surpasses the $2 million goal for its Campaign for Community in a scant two years.

2006-2007

IU closes its fiscal year with 112,195 donors, $147.5 million raised, and an endowment of $1.6 billion.

2007

IU South Bend dedicates its new outreach facility in downtown Elkhart. The community raised $4.2 million to support construction of the 25,000- square-foot Elkhart Center.

2007

At the public announcement of IU Bloomington’s Matching the Promise campaign, President McRobbie reveals that, in just four years, private giving has lowered the out-of-pocket cost for Indiana students from $4,278 to $341 for low income students, and from $10,650 to $8,291 for middle income students.
